“Beware Of The “Nice Guy Syndrome””

I have found that many small companies suffer from what I have come to call “Nice GUY Syndrome.” Keeping employees that have long ago lost their value to the organization, supporting family members to the detriment of the firm, giving to charity, carrying A/R long past terms just because you can, etc. You know what I mean—being the nice guy in your company feels good. It may feel good, but it is a deadly mistake – you don’t have the right to hurt your business. You have a legal responsibility to protect the company. Your business is a living entity like a child. If you abused your child, the law would step in; unfortunately, no one knows if you chose to harm your business. If you want or need to be charitable, do it with your own money, you don’t have the right to hurt your company!
